Malaysia Targets US$2.7 Billion in Medical Tourism Revenue by 2030

Malaysia is scaling up its medical tourism industry, aiming to generate US$2.7 billion annually by 2030 through affordability, advanced facilities, and patient‑cantered care.

Malaysia: Malaysia is positioning itself as Southeast Asia’s premier medical tourism hub. The Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) reported over 1.5 million international patient arrivals in 2024, generating nearly US$500 million in revenue already surpassing pre‑pandemic levels.

The government’s ambitious target of US$2.7 billion by 2030 is backed by investments in hospital infrastructure, visa facilitation, and international partnerships. Patients from Indonesia, China, India, and the Middle East are flocking to Malaysia for cardiology, fertility, orthopaedics, and wellness services.

Affordability remains Malaysia’s competitive edge. For example, an angioplasty costing US$55,000 in the United States is available for as little as US$3,000 in Malaysia. With 88 accredited medical facilities, including eight Joint Commission International hospitals, Malaysia combines cost‑effectiveness with global standards.

Industry leaders stress that capacity expansion is crucial. Hospitals are adding new wings and facilities to meet demand. As medical inflation rises globally, Malaysia’s blend of affordability and quality care is expected to secure its place as a leading destination for healthcare travellers.
