Singapore Expands Mental Health Nursing Homes

Hougang’s new co-located nursing and rehab homes add 305 psychiatric care beds, strengthening reintegration support.

305 Beds Added for Psychiatric Care

Singapore: Singapore’s Ministry of Health has opened new co-located nursing and rehabilitation homes in Hougang, adding 305 beds dedicated to psychiatric care. The initiative reflects the city-state’s growing recognition of mental health as a critical pillar of healthcare.

Why This Expansion Matters?

Mental health needs in Singapore have risen sharply, with depression and anxiety cases increasing post-pandemic. The new facilities aim to provide long-term care for patients with severe psychiatric conditions, while also offering rehabilitation programs to support reintegration into society. “We want to ensure that mental health patients receive holistic care that goes beyond hospital walls,” said Health Minister Ong Ye Kung.

What Does This Mean for Families?

Families often struggle with limited options for long-term psychiatric care. The Hougang homes provide a structured environment with medical supervision, therapy programs, and community engagement activities. This expansion is expected to ease pressure on acute hospitals and improve continuity of care.

The Ministry plans to replicate this model across other regions, integrating mental health into Singapore’s broader healthcare infrastructure. Experts say this marks a turning point in Asia’s approach to psychiatric care.
