South Korea Builds AI-Ready Health Data Infrastructure

South Korea is doubling down on healthcare innovation with a major push to expand its national health data infrastructure and, accelerate AI adoption across hospitals and clinics. The initiative aims to empower clinicians with better tools, insights, and collaboration to improve patient outcomes.

South Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare has unveiled a comprehensive initiative to modernise the country’s medical data infrastructure. This is a foundational step toward nationwide deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) in clinical care. Under the plan, public health and medical data systems will be upgraded to support secure, interoperable use of patient information while preserving privacy and consent. Officials say this will enable advanced analytics, predictive tools, and AI-assisted diagnostics across healthcare institutions of all sizes.

Traditionally, Korean hospitals and clinics have stored patient records in a variety of unconnected systems, limiting the ability to share and analyse data efficiently. The government’s new effort seeks to standardise and link different data sources, making it possible for AI tools to draw insights from larger, more diverse datasets without compromising security. Experts believe that such AI readiness could reduce clinician administrative burden, enhance diagnostic accuracy, and support personalised treatment planning.

Medical professionals across specialties have shown strong interest in the project, especially in areas like radiology, pathology, and emergency care, where data intensity and real-time interpretation are critical. At the same time, health leaders acknowledge the need for robust governance frameworks to ensure that data use aligns with ethical norms and patient expectations.
