Gynaecological cancers can occur in any part of the female reproductive system – the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, vagina or vulva. In Singapore, the most common gynaecological cancers are uterine cancer, ovarian cancer and cervical cancer, amongst the top 10 female cancers. Some of these cancers can be easily screened 8 or detected at an early stage. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a very common virus that infects the skin. HPV spreads through sexual contact and is very common in young women. There are over 100 different types of HPV, most of which are harmless and your body’s immune system will clear up the virus without any treatment required.

Uterine cancer, also known as endometrial cancer, is a cancer that starts in the endometrium, the inner lining of the uterus (womb). It is predominantly due to prolonged exposure to an excess of the female hormone called oestrogen. Endometrial cancer occurs when the cells of the endometrium start to grow too rapidly. The lining of the uterus may thicken in certain places. These areas of thickness may form a mass of tissue called a tumor.
