The release of Large-Language Models (LLMs) and chatbots built upon them such as ChatGPT and DeepSeek changed the way we use AI. These LLMs are the basis of Generative AI and they can generate new data, new information based on prompts. With them, we can create artworks, stories and reports with the right prompt and context.

What about using artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine and diagnosing medical problems? How accurate are they? In this article, we will explore that.

Diagnosing Breast Cancer with AI

Google’s DeepMind Health developed an AI system to detect breast cancer from mammography more accurately with Imperial College London in nearly 29,000 women in UK and USA. The randomized controlled clinical trial in Sweden on 105,934 women demonstrated that another AI-supported screening system improved detection of breast cancer.

Diagnosing Parkinson’s Disease with AI

Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) developed an AI software that could detect Parkinson’s disease by analysing a person’s nocturnal breathing. They developed a device that will collect information about the subject’s breathing patterns via radio waves. The patterns are then analysed by AI, which could detect the disease risks with higher confidence and helps to estimate disease’s severity and progression.

Diagnosing Appendicitis with AI

CT scans are typically used in aiding physicians to diagnose appendicitis. However, universal use of CT scans can be limited by resources or radiation risk. Recently, AI software has been deployed to detect acute appendicitis in hospitals to reduce unnecessary surgery.

In conclusion, AI software for healthcare information usually goes through intensive data training first and a subsequent validation stage. It can be more accurate and effective at diagnosing medical problems than a human doctor only when the AI algorithms are trained on the correct type of dataset, involved in the diagnostics at the correct stage of the clinical workflow, and have gone through a vigorous clinical research study on real human patients.

Each person has unique biology, individualised clinical parameters and personal health characteristics. The dangers of using AI chatbot or AI software to self-diagnose medical problems on your own may cause wrong diagnosis and delay in seeking proper medical treatment. Hence, it is important that a human medical doctor makes the final diagnosis and give the correct treatment to patients.
