Innovations in prostate treatment without surgery

by | Feb 18, 2022 | Innovations, Product, Services, Urology, Urinary & Male Reproductive System

Enlarged prostate in men, usually due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), will cause slower urine flow, frequent urination or the waking up at night to urinate. When it is serious, traditional prostate resection surgery is needed. However, this surgery may cause impotence, urine leak or retrograde ejaculation. Recently, there are new innovations to treat enlarged prostate without surgery.

UroLift

A minimally-invasive procedure called UroLift is one such innovation utilized by urologists. It is more efficient than taking long-term medication and the recovery times are quick (back to work in 2 or 3 days). Furthermore, in most clinical research, it has no sexual side effects and poses no ejaculatory problems.

Usually taking less than an hour, a UroLift procedure is done under anaesthesia. Tiny implants are placed to open the urinary channel of the enlarged prostate. These implants are inserted for the lifting and holding of enlarged prostate tissue so that the urethra is unblocked, and urine can pass through easily.

Rezum

Rezum uses thermal therapy that injects steam vapour onto the prostate tissue. This heat treatment kills the excess prostate cells. Consequently, these dead cells are then naturally removed by the body’s self-cleansing mechanism. In the process, this shrinks the prostate and opens the urethra.

Similarly, Rezum can be done as a day procedure. Patients need to wear a urine catheter after Rezum and can return to normal activities within a few weeks after treatment. Rezum can also preserve sexual function.

iTIND

Temporary implantable nitinol device (iTIND) is a temporary implant inserted into the prostatic urethra in a fast and minimally-invasive manner. The outpatient procedure is simple and takes only about 5 minutes. After 5 to 7 days, the device is removed.

The device begins to work immediately and quickly opens the urethra. This brings about fast relief for patients. Additionally, since this procedure does not remove prostate tissue using heat-based energy, there is little risk of sexual dysfunction involved.
